About Us

Hi, my name is Kate Johnstone and I am an Interior designer. I love creating welcoming, functional spaces where families can be together in comfort. I also want my clients to feel ready and confident when hosting the next family or friend gathering.


How I started:

In 2013, while still working in Corporate, I fell in love with interior design. I started studying and experimenting every chance I could. Even at my office, I was bringing in chairs and lamps to make my space cozy for me and my team. A pivotal moment for me was when I came upon a blogger. I followed her, reached out to meet her and eventually worked with her on some spaces in two of my homes. I was all in. And I quickly knew that as a people pleaser I would also love sharing what I had learned with others to help them create a beautiful home. In 2014, I was published in Better Homes & Gardens DIY issue for my shoestring budget kitchen and dining room.

A move from St. Louis to Charlotte in 2015 prompted my formal career change, officially leaving the corporate world behind and launching into design. In the fall of 2019 I created Valentine Lane Interiors to support business that was starting to happen organically. I value education, albeit not in a school setting, but rather concurrently working for myself and some of the best of the best designers in Charlotte, two years with West Trade Interiors and three years with K. Interiors where I am still lucky to be part time. I am now a fully built design firm assisting clients from a la carte needs all the way through construction.
